Platform capabilities
Every network exposes a different safe automation surface.
Connecting an account does not mean every action is possible on it. Each network decides what software is allowed to do, so the honest answer differs per network, and you are told which before you rely on it.
Publishing
Posting is available on every network you can connect. Posts are written from what your business told us and wait for your approval before they go out. Once an account has a track record of you approving what it writes, you can let it publish on a schedule without checking each one, and you can take that back at any time.
Replies and conversations
Answering people in public works everywhere posting works, and that is where most of the useful conversation happens anyway. Someone asking a real question under a post is a warmer signal than a follow, and answering them where others can read it does double duty.
Direct messages
This is the one that differs, and it is worth knowing before you pick a tool. Bluesky and Reddit let software send direct messages. X does too. LinkedIn and Threads do not publish any endpoint for it, so no tool can send direct messages there through an official route, whatever it claims. On those two, conversations continue in public replies instead.
Why does it matter which networks allow direct messages?
Because the usual promise of social automation is that it will message people for you. On the two networks most business audiences sit on, that is not something software is permitted to do. Tools that offer it anyway drive the account through an unofficial session, which is against the platform rules and puts the account at risk of restriction. We would rather tell you what is real than sell you the version that gets your account limited.
Which network should I start with?
The one your buyers already read. If you sell to other businesses, that is usually LinkedIn, and public replies are the path there. If your audience is technical or community-driven, Reddit and Bluesky give you the full range including direct messages. You can connect more than one, and the same understanding of your business is used across all of them.
