Which social networks actually have a DM API

Short answer: Bluesky and Reddit expose direct messages to software. Threads and LinkedIn do not. X does, behind pass-through pricing. Last checked May 2026.

Threads

Meta shipped in-app direct messages for Threads in July 2025 and has published no API endpoint for them. There is no official way for software to read or send a Threads DM, and no provider can sell you one. This is a platform limitation, not a vendor gap. If a tool claims to automate Threads DMs through an API, that API does not exist.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn exposes no official messaging API for outreach. The only working path is unofficial cookie-session access, which carries daily action caps described by its own vendors as being there "to reduce detection risk", and reported account warnings and disconnections. Weigh that honestly: the downside is a restriction on the account whose network you are trying to use.

What this means if you are automating outreach

The useful conclusion is not "buy a second vendor". It is that the shape of the funnel has to change per network, because two of the most valuable ones cannot carry a private message at all:

A tool that pretends this distinction does not exist will either quietly do nothing on half your accounts, or reach for the cookie-session route without telling you.

One more constraint worth knowing

On most networks a DM is only permitted to someone who contacted the business first. That is a platform rule and also the difference between organic acquisition and cold spam. Any system that can start a thread with a stranger is one that can get an account banned.

Magnetiq is built around this constraint rather than against it: it picks the funnel by what each platform can actually carry, and never attempts a DM where no API exists.
